Cooperation with China

The Institut Polytechnique de Paris is building international partnerships around the world. As part of this deployment of international collaborations, the Institute has developed agreements with Chinese universities.
Cooperation with China

The joint “CSC - Institut Polytechnique de Paris” program was signed in 2021. Each year, this cooperation program allows around 80 excellent Chinese students to be admitted to the Institut polytechnique de Paris, within the framework of the PhD track programs, PhD programs or the Engineer program of the 5 schools, to benefit from a CSC grant for the duration of their studies in France.

The joint program "Institut Polytechnique de Paris / CSC" for the training of Chinese doctoral students aims to support excellent Chinese candidates admitted to a doctoral program at Institut polytechnqiue de Paris. IP Paris and the CSC also agree to support each year Chinese students admitted to a joint PhD program in partnership between the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and a Chinese university.

Each year, this cooperation program allows around 30 Chinese students admitted under the IP Paris doctoral program or a thesis co-supervision program to benefit from a CSC scholarship during their studies.

The scholarship is dedicated to Chinese students registered through the CSC-IP Paris International Doctoral Admission Program. At the time of application, students may be enrolled in master's programs at Chinese universities or other universities abroad, including those enrolled in a master's program at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris.

At PhD level, the CSC and IP Paris support cooperation in the following areas of study:

  • Fundamental and applied mathematics
  • Computing, Data, Artificial Intelligence
  • Physics
  • Information, Communications, Electronics
  • Mechanical and energy engineering
  • Economics, Management and Social Sciences
  • Biology and Chemistry

 

Financial support

CSC funding is obtained from the first year and for all the duration of the doctoral programme. The duration of the funding granted will be consistent with the duration of the studies as indicated in the conditional letter of acceptance issued by the Doctoral School: 36 to 48 months for doctoral programs, 6 to 24 months for co-supervisions. The CSC will provide the laureates with a living allowance and covers a return trip from France to China at the most economical rate as well as the costs of visa application.

Institut Polytechnique de Paris will help the laureates in their efforts to obtain an accommodation on campus or to find a room or apartment off campus as well as with their visa / residence permit formalities and opening a bank account.

Selection criteria

  1. Applicants must be citizens of the People's Republic of China.
  2. Successful applicants must return to China upon completion of their studies.
  3. Applicants must follow the application procedure described on the IP Paris website.
    • The laboratories of IP Paris submit specific thesis subjects before October 15 on the ADUM website. After validation by the doctoral school, the thesis proposals are published on the following webpage dedicated to the cooperation program between IP Paris and CSC for Chinese students: click here
    • From November 8 to January 5, 2024, students submit their application to the IP Paris website: they complete the IP Paris application form and apply for up to three specific PhD subjects in order of preference.
    • IP Paris will assess the candidates taking into account their academic results and the suitability of the candidate's profile for the thesis subject. Based on the information provided by the International Affairs Department of IP Paris, researchers who have posted a thesis subject will be responsible for interviewing and selecting potential doctoral students. Selection interviews will take place from January 15.
    •  If a candidate is selected, an agreement will be established with the host researcher / laboratory on a detailed joint doctoral project which is the last condition necessary for admission to the IP Paris doctoral program.
    • If the student is admitted to IP Paris, he then prepares the application for the CSC scholarship including his doctoral project with the host laboratory. The IP Paris doctoral schools (ED IP Paris or EDMH) will write a conditional admission letter accepting the student in the doctoral program.
    • If the candidate for the CSC scholarship is selected, the host institution issues a letter of admission and the student obtains the student visa to come to France and start the doctoral program at IP Paris in October 2024.

The joint "Institut Polytechnique de Paris / CSC" program for the training of Chinese students aims to support excellent Chinese candidates admitted to a PhD track program at Institut Polytechnique de Paris.

Each year, this cooperation program allows about 15 Chinese students admitted under the PhD track IP Paris program to get a financial support. At the time of their application, students must generally have graduated with a Bachelor's degree from their home university before arriving in France.

The PhD track aims high potential students who wish to meet the scientific challenges of tomorrow. This program allows selected students to benefit from the ecosystem of excellence of IP Paris. They are associated, from the very first year to the research activities carried out in the laboratories of IP Paris. Each student benefits from an individual and personalized supervision by a researcher and will be in direct interaction with the scientific community of IP Paris, in the heart of an innovation cluster recognized worldwide.

The first two years of the program, leading to a Master's degree, are designed to allow students to acquire the necessary tools for the successful completion of an ambitious research project, supervised by an academic tutor. The following three years are entirely dedicated to the research project and lead to the PhD degree from IP Paris. Each student who follows this program benefits from the unique and individualized supervision of a researcher recognized in his discipline.

Financial support from the CSC is obtained from the first year and for all years of the program. The duration of the funding granted will be consistent with the duration of the studies as indicated in the conditional acceptance letter issued by the Graduate School: from 48 to 60 months for the PhD Track program including 12 to 24 months for the Master level and 36 months for the Doctorate level. The CSC will provide the laureates with a living allowance and pay for a return trip from France to China at the most economical rate and cover the costs of visa application.

For the PhD Track program, the Institut Polytechnique de Paris does not exempt from registration fees or from the Student and Campus Life Contribution (CVEC), the amounts of which are set by ministerial decree.

    • The results will be available at the end of march, 2024.
    • If a Chinese candidate is selected for the PhD track IP Paris program, he then prepares his application for the CSC scholarship. The graduate school IP Paris will issue a conditional admission letter.

The joint program "CSC - Institut Polytechnique de Paris" for the training of engineers aims to support excellent Chinese students admitted to the engineering cycle in one of the 5 schools of Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris): Ecole polytechnique, ENSTA Paris, ENSAE Paris, Telecom Paris and Telecom Sud Paris.

Each year, this cooperation program allows around 35 Chinese students admitted through the Engineer IP Paris program or a double degree program to benefit from a CSC scholarship during their two or three years of study in France.

The scholarship is open to Chinese students recruited through the international Engineer IP Paris admission programme and to students selected for a double degree at one of IP Paris schools.

During the application process, students must be in the last year of the Bachelor or must have already obtained the Bachelor's degree. The duration of studies is generally 24 to 36 months, after which students obtain an engineering degree from one of the member schools of IP Paris.

Funding

Funding from the CSC is obtained from the first year and for all years of the engineer curriculum. The duration of the funding granted will be consistent with the duration of studies as indicated in the conditional letter of acceptance. The CSC will provide the laureates with a living allowance and will cover a return trip from France to China at the most economical rate and will also cover the costs of visa application.

Institut Polytechnique de Paris will help the laureates in their process to obtain an accommodation on campus or to find a room or apartment off campus. IP Paris will also provide support to the laureates concerning the visa/residence permit application or opening a bank account.

In addition, IP Paris will allow laureates to take French courses free of charge for at least the first year. The 5 member schools may provide, depending on the profile of the students, financial support which may partially or fully cover tuition fees. All students must pay the Student and Campus Life Contribution (CVEC), the amount of which is set by ministerial decree.

  1. Applicants must be citizens of the People's Republic of China.
  2. Applicants must not work abroad. Successful applicants must commit to returning to China upon completion of their studies in France.

  5. Students must have graduated from the Bachelor level at their home university before arriving in France.
  6. Admitted students must reach a level of French equivalent to level B1 at the start of the first year of study for students going to ENSTA Paris, ENSAE Paris, Télécom Paris and Télécom SudParis. Some students going to Télécom Paris and Télécom Sud Paris may choose a course in English, their letter of acceptance must mention that their level of English should meet the language criteria of IP Paris. Ecole Polytechnique does not require any level of French at the start of the course in September as the School organizes French training after the arrival of students in France, from September. For all schools, students must reach B2 level at the end of their studies in order to obtain the engineering degree.
  7.  Applicants must submit their application directly to IP Paris before the deadline. Applicants must specify in their application that they are candidates for the joint IP Paris / CSC-engineer program call. The conditions and rules for applications are detailed here:
  8. IP Paris will evaluate the applications taking into account the academic results and the level of foreign languages. Written and oral tests will be organized. Admission results will be published in November or December. In February of each year, IP Paris will provide each successful candidate with a letter of acceptance and provide the list of students accepted to the CSC. If English is the language of study, this letter must mention that the students' level of English should meet the requirements of IP Paris.
  9. After receiving the acceptance letter from IP Paris, applicants should apply to the CSC at http://apply.csc.edu.cn by the end of March each year.
  10. The CSC will evaluate the applications in March and April according to its criteria and level of requirement.

The Institut Polytechnique de Paris and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) have signed a framework agreement on co-supervision of theses, allowing PhD students from both universities to carry out a co-directed thesis and largely conduct their research in a laboratory of the partner university.
