Three researchers from the Paris Institute of Technology awarded CNRS medals

10 Nov. 2025
Stéphane Mallat, alumnus of École Polytechnique (class of X81) and former chair of the applied mathematics department at École Polytechnique, Laurent Bopp, Director of Research at the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD*), and Stefania Cacovich, Research Fellow at the Institut photovoltaïque d'Ile-de-France (IPVF**), were honored by the CNRS for the year 2025. They received gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively, for the quality of their work.

The CNRS Gold Medal, a Silver Medal, and a Bronze Medal were awarded to three researchers from the Institut Polytechnique de Paris.

Stéphane Mallat

By receiving the CNRS Gold Medal, Stéphane Mallat has been awarded the highest distinction of the CNRS and one of the most prestigious scientific awards in France. The researcher is recognized for his work at the intersection of mathematics and computer science. Image compression format (JPEG 2000), a memory-efficient and effective method of data storage and analysis. Stéphane Mallat's work has had a profound impact on the fields of applied mathematics, signal processing, and artificial intelligence. He is a pioneer in neural networks, deep learning, and generative AI. His research has resulted in several international patents. During his career, Stéphane Mallat has chaired the Department of Applied Mathematics at École Polytechnique, where he also taught for several years. He then joined the École Normale Supérieure, followed by the Collège de France, where he currently holds the Chair in Data Science.

The CNRS Gold Medal is one of the highest scientific honors.

Laurent Bopp

Laurent Bopp is Director of Climate Science Research at the Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD*), which is affiliated with École Polytechnique. He specializes in the ocean carbon cycle. Through this field, he studies climate change and, more specifically, its interactions with ecosystems, biodiversity, and the ocean environment. To do this, he uses modeling and develops new digital tools to understand the evolution of the ocean as a carbon sink. Through his work, Laurent Bopp seeks to determine, for example, whether the ocean can be used to store ever-increasing amounts of carbon and what effects its acidification has on coastal ecosystems (particularly mangroves). The researcher was the lead author of the IPCC's 5th and 6th reports and was recently elected to the French Academy of Sciences. This CNRS silver medal recognizes the quality of his work and the importance of ocean environmental issues.

The CNRS Silver Medal recognizes the originality, quality, and importance of the work of its recipients at the national and international levels.

Stefania Cacovich

Stefania Cacovich is a CNRS research fellow at the Île-de-France Photovoltaic Institute (IPVF**), which is supervised by École Polytechnique, among others. She is interested in solar cells—more specifically, the different layers that make them up—with a view to improving their stability and efficiency. She uses various imaging techniques to map the optoelectronic and transport properties of these layers and study how to limit losses during the transport of electrical charges between them. She uses artificial intelligence to process the mass of data related to this work. The aging of photovoltaic systems is also one of her areas of focus. Stefania Cacovich holds a PhD in Materials Science from the University of Cambridge (2018).

The CNRS Bronze Medal encourages the early, already fruitful work of scientists who are specialists in their field and encourages them to continue on their path.
