Operation CIEDS 2024: a look back at a day dedicated to defense and security

21 Nov. 2024
The second edition of Operation CIEDS brought together over 320 participants from industry, research, defense operators and innovation intermediaries. A day rich in exchanges to meet the challenges of defense innovation and discover how Institut Polytechnique de Paris is involved in major defense and security issues.
Operation CIEDS 2024: a look back at a day dedicated to defense and security

Organized by the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and its partners, Operation CIEDS was back again in 2024! Following on from the 2023 event,  which attracted over 230 participants, the 2024 edition was held on July 4 on the Polytechnique campus.

The aim of this second edition was to bring together even more communities. Over 320 participants attended: researchers, teacher-researchers, doctoral and post-doctoral students from Institut Polytechnique de Paris laboratories, staff from the French Ministries of the Armed Forces and Interior, within the AID and DGA, as well as forces, company and start-up staff and innovation intermediaries.

New features for 2024

Attendees were able to appreciate the new features of the 2024 edition:

  • A keynote on defense innovation
  • Two round tables on dual themes linked to societal issues:
    • Round table #1 “People at the heart of defense systems - Preparation, performance and care”.
    • Round Table #2 “Major maritime challenges - Exploration, control and strategic autonomy”.
  • Totems of the 13 new CIEDS 2024 projects
  • A public vote for the poster competition

Plenary session

The CIEDS was very proud to welcome Thierry Coulhon, Chairman of the Board of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, and Patrick Aufort, Director of the French Defense Innovation Agency, to open the day.

Thierry Coulhon emphasized the importance of CIEDS' role in the strategy of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris.

CIEDS' activities contribute to strengthening the country's sovereignty by devising and developing responses to the major scientific challenges facing defense.

Patrick Aufort, through his testimony, illustrated the positive trajectory of the partnership between the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and the Ministry of the Armed Forces.

I can only encourage you to keep up this momentum by focusing on the 3 axes - project management, development and training - so that we can continue to work together to ensure the operational superiority of our forces.

Admiral Eric Malbrunot, General Innovation Officer at the French Armed Forces General Staff, honored the CIEDS community with a keynote speech on “The need to innovate in a fast-changing world”.

Our strength is the extraordinary engineering capacity we have in France, and particularly at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, to be decisive in this extremely complex competition.

The exchange forum

During the lunchtime exchange forum, there were many exchanges around :

✔ 12 stands for our academic partners and collaborations

✔ 1 space innovation area

✔ 8 start-ups from the Institut Polytechnique de Paris entrepreneurial ecosystem

Thematic workshops

Several themes were also addressed in afternoon workshops:

  • Artificial intelligence and robotics
  • Communications and system security
  • The challenges of materials in defense
  • Round table: Sovereignty and defense strategy: what role for Institut Polytechnique de Paris?

Poster prizes

CIEDS congratulates the 42 participants in the poster session of Operation CIEDS 2024, and in particular the three winners of the competition's public vote:

  • 1st prize: Randy Haddad, PhD student
Condensed Matter Physics Laboratory, EP and CNRS
“Hybrid coatings with hierarchical microstructure for the development of sustainable omniphobic textiles”.

  • 2nd prize: Victor Vince, CIFRE doctoral student
