A distinguished professor of computer science, Jamal Atif is a leading voice in artificial intelligence in France. Until recently Vice President at Université Paris Dauphine – PSL, he played a key role in establishing the Paris School of AI and has overseen several national initiatives, including the CNRS-led PEPR IA program. His research explores the robustness and security of learning models, algorithmic fairness, and interdisciplinary approaches to science.

With more than 120 publications and the supervision of around fifteen PhD students, he has built a reputation as one of France’s foremost experts in the field.

A strategic appointment

At IP Paris, he will be tasked with strengthening research excellence while driving technological innovation. The Institute’s ambition is to tackle today’s major challenges — from the ecological transition and digital transformation to health and defense — while bridging the gap between fundamental science and industrial applications.

“The appointment of Jamal Atif will enable us to take an important step forward in our scientific strategy and to attract top international talent,” said Thierry Coulhon, President of IP Paris.

For his part, Jamal Atif stated: “My goal is to create the right conditions for our researchers to deliver world-class science and to develop breakthrough innovations that serve society.”

IP Paris aiming for global leadership

This appointment is part of the governance reform launched in 2024 to position the Institute among the world’s top academic institutions. The objective: to establish IP Paris as a driver of scientific and technological innovation, able to shape major international debates and compete for the best minds.

With this new leadership role, IP Paris underscores its determination to accelerate research and innovation, building on the expertise of a figure already deeply involved in shaping national science policy.
