The Year 2 Large Facilities Master’s program covers the physics and technology of the specific large facilities based on electromagnetism, in particular, particle accelerators, lasers and tokamaks. All these instruments participate in generating and controlling plasma - ionized matter constituted by free charged particles. In this context, a multitude of processes come into play: plasma injection for fusion or particle accelerator seed; plasma confinement with magnetic fields generated by superconducting coils or under irradiation; plasma heating and particle acceleration by high-intensity lasers or radio-frequency sources. 

The program aims to train researchers and engineers with generalist profiles and multi-disciplinary skills (engineering, technology and physics) to design, construct, operate and manage these facilities. This is a multidisciplinary program encompassing lectures, tutorials, hands-on research and a 5- month mentored research internship. 

Objectives

This Master’s program enables students to:

  • Acquire advanced knowledge in physics and the technology of large facilities 
  • Specialize in particle accelerators, lasers or tokamaks
  • Gain practical experience through a 5-month mentored research internship 

Students graduating from this program will be equipped to pursue a research career:

  • As a researcher, research engineer, design engineer or project manager in the public sector in a major research organization (CEA, CNRS, ONERA )
  • In the private sector in companies or industrial groups with strong research and development activities

Admission requirements

Academic prerequisites

Completion of the first year of a Master in physics at Institut Polytechnique de Paris or equivalent in France or abroad.

Language prerequisites

English
