Going abroad with Erasmus+

The Institut Polytechnique de Paris is currently able to fund mobility programmes for Master’s or PhD-level work placements. These placements may be short-term (from 5 to 31 days) or long-term (between 2 and 12 months). Two days’ travel – one before the start and one after the end of the academic activities – may be funded on an exceptional basis if there is a valid reason (for example, the use of a sustainable mode of transport).

To apply, you must be enrolled on a Master’s programme at the IP Paris Graduate School, in the IP Paris Doctoral School, or in the Hadamard Doctoral School of Mathematics (EDMH) within one of the constituent schools of IP Paris.

Engineering students and undergraduates also enrolled on a programme at a French institution partnering with IP Paris or on a programme at one of IP Paris’s constituent schools – ENSAE, ENSTA, École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC), École Polytechnique, Telecom Paris, Telecom SudParis – must contact the international relations department of that other institution to apply, where applicable, for Erasmus+ funding for internship mobility.

Any host organisation – laboratory, university, company, etc. – whether public or private, is eligible, provided that it is not a European institution or a body funded by the European Union. Priority will be given to placements carried out in research laboratories.

The dates of the placement must correspond to the first and last days of compulsory attendance at the host organisation. They must not fall on a weekend or a public holiday. If another Erasmus+ mobility period took place during the same academic cycle (Master’s or PhD), the total duration of the two mobility periods must not exceed 12 months.

The mobility period must be recognised as part of the study programme, either through ECTS credits or by other means. To ensure the academic recognition of activities undertaken during a mobility period abroad, a learning agreement will be drawn up, detailing the activities carried out whilst abroad. Gap-year mobility periods are not eligible.

To support the internationalisation efforts of the teaching and administrative teams who are fully committed to developing the Graduate School’s programme offering, the IP Paris International Relations Office funds staff mobility schemes. These mobility schemes can last from 2 days to 2 months (excluding travel time), although short-term mobility is preferred. If you are a PhD student on a contract, you are also eligible for these training and teaching mobility programmes.

Any IP Paris staff member who has successfully completed their probationary period may undertake a period of training (including language training), an internship or a work shadowing placement at a higher education institution, a public or private organisation in an Erasmus+ programme member country, or a partner university. Some European institutions organise group training sessions that are eligible for Erasmus+ funding for training: Imotion: Erasmus Staff Training.

Please note: Research assignments (symposia, conferences, fieldwork, etc.) are not eligible.

The Erasmus+ programme aims to promote equal opportunities and equal access, inclusion, diversity and equity across all its actions. The aim is to develop projects that promote equal opportunities for the benefit of people with fewer opportunities due to their social, economic or cultural background, their disability, their origin or their place of residence.

The programme provides institutions and participants with specific mechanisms and resources. Additional financial support will be offered to participants when they apply for mobility schemes.

For people with a disability, a long-term illness (ALD) or any other justified reason that may hinder their participation in a mobility scheme, an application for coverage of the necessary mobility expenses may be submitted to the Agency in France.

The Erasmus+ programme requires higher education institutions to raise participants’ awareness of the various measures they can take whilst abroad to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental footprint of their mobility activities. Additional funding is available for the use of sustainable modes of transport for mobility purposes.

Mobility can take place in any country participating in the Erasmus+ programme:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Turkey. 

Although it is possible to fund mobility activities in a country not listed above (third countries not associated with the programme), applications for such activities will not be given priority.

Please note that the following countries will soon join the programme but have not yet done so - as such, they are still considered third countries not associated with the programme: the United Kingdom, Switzerland.

The grant is calculated on the basis of several key criteria:

• The cost of living in the host country;
• The duration of the mobility period;
• The distance between the host country and Palaiseau;
• The type of transport used to travel to the host country;
• Your personal circumstances (grant recipient, long-term illness, etc.).

The amounts vary from year to year and will be communicated to you in the specific calls for applications.

To successfully apply for a call for applications, you must follow these steps:

Step 1 :

Contact your supervisor to explain your mobility project. If required by the call for applications, they may write you a letter of support.

Step 2 :

Look for an internship at an eligible organisation. Once you have been accepted, the host institution must draw up a letter of acceptance stating your future mentor and the exact dates of your placement. Ensure that your supervisor approves these details.

From March to May, for a mobility period between July and December.

Step 3 :

Gather all the documents required for your application: CV, cover letter, proof of third-party liability insurance, proof of health insurance cover, bank details, and any other documents specific to your situation (scholarship holder, long-term illness, etc.). The exact documents required will be specified in each call for applications.

The Institut Polytechnique de Paris runs three application rounds each year. The following dates are provided for information purposes only. Specific calls for applications will be published to specify the dates and to reiterate the current eligibility criteria. In the event of any discrepancy between the information on this page and a specific call for applications, the latter shall take precedence.
