Hadamard Doctoral School of Mathematics

Hadamard Doctoral School of Mathematics

The purpose of the Hadamard Doctoral School of Mathematics (EDMH) is to consolidate all doctoral training in mathematics within the area covered by the Université Paris-Saclay and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris. This training ranges from pure mathematics to the most applied mathematics, including subjects at the interface with mathematics (particularly with economics, IT, mechanical engineering, physics, engineering, and life sciences).

EDMH encompasses 15 institutions belonging to the Université Paris-Saclay and Institut Polytechnique de Paris, as well as a co-accredited institution (via Paris Sciences & Lettres) – the École Normale Supérieure – with 18 host laboratories, more than 300 PhD students, and more than 240 accredited PhD supervisors. The EDMH is extremely open to international recruitment.

EDMH is heavily supported by the Fondation Mathématique Jacques Hadamard (FMJH), and by the Labex de Mathématique Hadamard (LMH) for PhD grants, administrative staff, and funding. FMJH has played an essential role in establishing EDMH and continues to make an essential contribution to its development.

At the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, research in mathematics covers all fields ranging from pure mathematics (algebra, analysis, geometry…) to applied mathematics (numerical analysis, scientific computing, mathematical engineering, financial mathematics, modeling, optimization, probability, statistics…). A very strong emphasis is made on applications in a variety of domains including computer science and artificial intelligence, engineering, mechanics and mathematical physics, financial mathematics, economy. The Hadamard Doctoral School of Mathematics (EDMH) intends to promote the doctoral training in all aspects of mathematics, in particular in domains at the interface of mathematics and other fields of research.

For the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, the research laboratories depending of EDMH are the following:

All of these institutions are represented at EDMH by a scientific correspondent who is the focal point for doctorate and tutors.

Enrollment and re-enrollment

Any academic year started is due (total registration fees, not pro rata) regardless of the thesis start date. The period of an academic year is from 01/09 to 31/08 of the following year and re-registrations must be made between 01/09 and 30/11 even if the thesis has started late. 4th year doctoral students who will defend their thesis before December 31st do not have to re-register, nor pay the CVEC contribution, nor pay the tuition fees.

Procedure of thesis defense

PhD thesis defense by videoconference

Order of 27 October 2020 relating to the use of video-conferencing for the presentation of work within the framework of an (HDR) and a thesis defense

In this context of new lockdown, the activity of the laboratories duly reorganized continues. In particular, the thesis defenses must continue. For the thesis defenses planned during this period, the dematerialized solution is preferred and the thesis defenses must preferably take place by videoconference (using Zoom or other tools, Zoom access may be requested to the Doctoral School).

Additional documentation for application and affiliation to the doctoral school are available in French.

All the information on the structure of the EDMH, the various scientific and administrative contacts, the application and defense procedures to PhD fellowships, as well as the events and courses are available on the EDMH website.
