DaTSHealth: Digital Health Powered by Data
The large-scale use of health data, combined with advances in artificial intelligence and the growing accessibility of digital health technologies, is profoundly transforming medical practice and the organization of healthcare systems. Engineering plays a central role in this transformation. It draws on approaches such as mathematical modeling, signal processing, biomedical image analysis, machine learning, and high-performance computing to unlock the potential of data that has so far been underused or entirely unused in the medical field.
Aware of these challenges, the Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris) leverages its scientific and technological expertise to support this transition. This ambition is reflected in key initiatives such as the creation of the interdisciplinary center Engineering for Health (E4H) and the launch of the excellence program EUR BERTIP.
Building on these actions, IP Paris is now launching a new program through the Engineering for Health (E4H) center: DaTSHealth*. This cross-disciplinary training program, focused on data for sustainable digital health, is a winner of the “Compétences et Métiers d’Avenir” (Skills and Future Professions) call for projects under the France 2030 plan, supported by the French National Research Agency (ANR).
The program is built around three complementary pillars:
- Training: Educating engineers and young researchers specialized in health data sciences;
- Awareness: Introducing young people to the challenges of digital health;
Educational Resources: Producing and disseminating knowledge on digital health through a variety of educational formats.

- Nesma HOUMANI, Ph.D.
Director, DaTSHealth Program – Institut Polytechnique de Paris
Dr. Nesma Houmani is a faculty member and researcher in neuroengineering. Her work lies at the intersection of signal and image processing, statistical modeling of multi-source data, and machine learning.
Since 2019, she has served as the Coordinator of the Health Engineering Track at Télécom SudParis, a program designed to train well-rounded digital engineers in health technologies while fostering a deep understanding of their applications, as well as the societal and ethical issues they raise.
In 2023, Dr. Houmani developed a transdisciplinary track within the DaTSHealth program at Institut Polytechnique de Paris. This initiative addresses the entire health data value chain—from data collection and storage to processing, analysis, and translation into actionable insights. The program aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to harness health data as a catalyst for innovation in diagnostics, patient monitoring, therapeutic prediction, hospital management, and public health.
Beyond her academic and research activities, Dr. Houmani is deeply engaged in outreach initiatives promoting digital health literacy among young audiences, inspiring future careers and contributing to the broader dissemination of scientific culture.
