Four researchers from the Institut Polytechnique de Paris awarded ERC Starting Grants

04 Sep. 2025
Vignesh Kannan from the Solid Mechanics Laboratory (LMS*, École Polytechnique), Thomas Debris-Alazard from the Computer Science Laboratory of the École Polytechnique (LIX*), Alejandro Alvarez Laguna from the Plasma Physics Laboratory (LPP*, École Polytechnique), and Anna Korba from the Center for Research in Economics and Statistics (CREST*, École Polytechnique/ENSAE Paris) have been awarded ERC grants for 2025 in the Starting Grant category. Their projects concern shape memory alloys, post-quantum cryptography, plasma propulsion, and statistical sampling.

About the ERC

The European Research Council (ERC), established by the European Union in 2007, is Europe's premier funding body for excellence in exploratory research. It funds creative researchers of any nationality and age to carry out projects across Europe.

The ERC offers four core grant programs: Starting Grants, Consolidation Grants, Advanced Grants, and Synergy Grants. ERC Starting Grants are aimed at young researchers at the beginning of their careers (2 to 7 years post-doctorate). Each winner will be able to develop a team of their choice, focused on an exploratory scientific issue at the frontiers of knowledge.

With its additional proof-of-concept grant program, the ERC helps recipients bridge the gap between their pioneering research and the early stages of commercialization.

The ERC is governed by an independent governing body, the Scientific Council. Since November 2021, Maria Leptin has been the President of the ERC. The ERC's overall budget for the period 2021-2027 is over €16 billion, as part of the Horizon Europe program, under the responsibility of the European Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva.
