The Quantum, Light, Materials, and Nano Sciences Master’s program aims to provide students with comprehensive training in quantum and nano sciences within three distinct paths.

The path Light and Matter (path 1) is for students interested in quantum technologies, quantum optics, atomic and molecular physics, light-matter interactions, and lasers.

The path Condensed matter and its interfaces (path 2) addresses the electronic and structural properties of solid-state matter, and its interfaces with dilute matter, nanotechnologies, and materials chemistry.

The path Nanodevices and Technologies (path 3) focuses on the fundamental and technological aspects of physical objects at the nanoscale.

The Master’s program curriculum is supported by the laboratories of Institut Polytechnique de Paris and University Paris-Saclay dedicated to all the aspects of covered by the various paths. The program comprises courses, lab work, and an internship that can be completed at one of the top laboratories of the partner institutions.

Objectives

This Master’s program enables student to:

  • Acquire solid knowledge in the major fields of quantum physics, photons, atoms and molecules, condensed matter and materials, light-matter interaction and the properties of nanodevices.
  • Learn about fundamental theoretical and experimental aspects, as well as technological applications.
  • Build a strong foundation to follow more specific elective courses (Jan-Feb) for a major in light and matter, condensed matter or nanotechnologies.
  • Gain research experience through an internship in a top lab of the Plateau de Saclay.

Students who graduate from this Master are equipped to:

  • Pursue a PhD (75% of students)
  • Build a career in Research and Development in industry e.g. quantum technologies, laser development, optical instrument design, image processing, telecommunications, quantum materials, material design, nano components and systems, security, and microelectronics

The curriculum is divided in 3 quarters. For each quarter, the courses are divided between core courses , options, and lab work. Some are specific to the courses and others are common to 2 or 3 paths.

The curriculum ends with a mandatory 4-month internship in a top laboratory at Institut Polytechnique de Paris, University Paris-Saclay, in France or abroad. It is concluded by a written report and an oral defense.

Admission requirements

Academic prerequisites

  • Completion of the first year of a Master with highest honors at Institut Polytechnique de Paris or equivalent in France or abroad
  • Applicants must present a personal project coherent with the philosophy of the Physics by Research Master - applicants are advised to contact faculty members in their field of study well ahead of the application deadline with a statement on their scientific interests to coordinate their proposed study program
  • Due to the highly selective nature of the program, applicants are strongly encouraged to also apply to one of the topical Master tracks at Institut Polytechnique de Paris

  • Working knowledge of French will enhance the range of options available
