Distributed Intelligence Challenge, 2023 Edition: "Control a swarm of drones for rescue missions!"

02 Oct. 2023
Supported by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces and the Defense Innovation Agency, the Centre Interdisciplinaire d'Études pour la Défense et la Sécurité - CIEDS (Interdisciplinary Center for Defense and Security Studies) at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris announces the launch of the "Distributed Intelligence" challenge, Edition 2023, as well as its presentation session. This challenge is a simulation-based drone swarm programming competition, on topics with real impact!
Distributed Intelligence Challenge, 2023 Edition: "Control a swarm of drones for rescue missions!"

Exploring an unknown area for rescue missions

The aim of the mission is to explore an unknown, difficult-to-access and potentially dangerous area, in order to search for people and guide them out of the area.

A typical use case is an investigation in the darkness or smoke of the basement of a collapsed building to locate trapped people and rescue them by guiding them to the exit.

The drones will have to manage the limited range of communications, collaborate with each other to acquire information, be able to handle sensor and communications failures and unforeseen events such as loss of drones or GPS, in order to carry out this mission autonomously.

Entry requirements

The competition is open to students from the Institut Polytechnique de Paris and Ministry of Defence schools (ISAE-SUPAÉRO and ENSTA Bretagne).

The challenge will take place exclusively in a Python simulation environment, where the aim is to develop a decentralized control system.

The challenge does not require any significant prior technical skills (beyond knowledge of the Python language), and will mainly mobilize participants' creativity and scientific curiosity.

The assessment will be carried out on an unknown board during the competition final and a presentation in front of a jury of experts.

Presentation session & launch of the challenge

To mark the launch of the 2023 edition of the "Distributed Intelligence" challenge, the CIEDS team is organizing a session to present the competition!

  • Date: October 9, 2023
  • Time: 6pm - 7pm
  • Venue: Amphitheatre of the Drahi'X Novation center, École polytechnique and webinar

This session will present the timetable, the scenario, how to take part...

Register and come along to find out all about this "Distributed Intelligence" challenge, 2023 edition!

Team support

Throughout the challenge, teams are supported by the organizing team, made up of experts in the field of navigation, exploration and multi-drone coordination.

This approach will enable students to propose varied and innovative solutions to navigation, exploration and rescue problems.

Testimonials from 2022 winners

Etienne Fouqué, ISAE-SUPAERO: "It was a great opportunity to put your programming and project management skills to the test. The Swarm-Rescue 2022-2023 challenge is very well conceived, and I invite students from the schools involved to get involved for future challenges!"

Mirado Rajaomarosata, ENSTA Bretagne: "This has been a very good experience in multi-agent robotics for rescue in an unknown and noisily perceived environment."
