2025 Shanghai Ranking: IP Paris rises 99 places worldwide to rank 224th

Institut Polytechnique de Paris appears for the first time in the top 250 universities worldwide in the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU), published on August 15, 2025. It ranks 224th, up 99 places in one year. At the national level, IP Paris now ranks 9th among French institutions.
"This position reflects recognition of our fundamental, collective, and transformative work. It gradually positions IP Paris in its rightful position among the world's leading scientific institutions. It is also an encouraging sign that confirms the soundness of our strategic choices, particularly in terms of recruiting top-level academics, and encourages us to continue our path with confidence", underlines Thierry Coulhon, President of Institut Polytechnique de Paris.
A scientific recognition
This improvement is based on:
• the growing presence of highly cited researchers,
• the rise in the weighted number of publications in Nature and Science,
• the continued increase in publications indexed in the SCIE/SSCI databases.
Such advances have also been made possible thanks to high-level research carried out by a collective of six leading engineering schools – École polytechnique, ENSTA, École nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC), ENSAE Paris, Télécom Paris, Télécom SudParis – and seven interdisciplinary centers, which are driving research focused on the major challenges of the 21st century (particularly in AI, climate, health, defense, and security):
• 5,100 scientific publications,
• 45 research laboratories,
• 2,250 teacher-researchers and research staff,
• an academic body with 41% international profiles, contributing to a growing global influence.
A momentum reinforced by institutional developments
In 2024, École nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC) joined IP Paris, enabling the Institute to complete its initially pre-defined scope. The merger of ENSTA Paris with ENSTA Brest opens up new prospects in the maritime and environmental fields.
A consistent track record on the international stage
Beyond the ARWU ranking, IP Paris is also progressing in other major global rankings:
• 41st worldwide and 2nd in France in the QS World University Rankings 2026,
• 71st worldwide and 3rd in France in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2025.
These results confirm continued progress that is recognized internationally.
