The IP Paris Interdisciplinary Center for Seas and Ocean at the third United Nations Ocean Conference

A collaboration with maritime industry in support of ocean observation

For more than a century, a handful of commercial ships have been collecting essential meteorological and oceanographic data, improving safety, forecasting, and understanding of the climate. The 10,000 Ships for the Ocean initiative invites the maritime industry to join forces to develop and equip fleets with advanced, standardized, and automated weather and ocean technologies to generate global benefits for operations, forecasting, early warning, and environmental management.

The 10,000 Ships for the Ocean initiative

Presented at UNOC3, the "10,000 Ships for the Ocean" initiative is led by the Interdisciplinary Center for Seas and Ocean (CIMO).

Its aim is to strengthen collaboration between researchers and the maritime industry to significantly boost the global collection of ocean and weather data, and to help build the next generation of ocean observation fleets.

"As a world-class institution dedicated to scientific excellence, high-level training and innovation, we firmly believe that ocean observation science and technology will improve marine forecasting, help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen early warning systems and, more broadly, support essential services for our societies. Mobilizing 10,000 ships around the world to better understand the ocean, refine our climate models and take concrete action in the face of environmental emergencies: this is a challenge worthy of our commitments", explained Thierry Coulhon, Chairman of the Management Board of IP Paris.
