Vibrations, Waves and Acoustics
The problems related to vibrations, waves and acoustics are found in many industrial fields, such as transportation, energy, and entertainment. The PhD Track “Vibrations, Waves and Acoustics” of IP Paris is designed to provide students advanced scientific skills in the domain of wave propagation and dynamics in fluid and solid media. A strong emphasis is made on multi-disciplinary skills useful in many applications, such as signal processing, identification, optimization and human perception. This program is proposed to students with excellent skills in Mechanics in order for them to develop an ambitious research project in one of the following topics:
- non destructive testing
- geophysical prospecting
- structural acoustics and nonlinear vibrations
- electroacoustics and active materials
- aeroacoustics and fluid-structure interaction

The academic program of the first two years of the PhD Track is defined as a selection of courses from the Master program in “Mechanics” of IP Paris. Depending on the student background, a mentor will be selected among the Community of Mechanics. He will interact with the student in order to establish his personal academic training for the first two years, closely coupled to his field of interest for his PhD project. The training combines scientific courses with research projects performed in the environment of IP Paris. The student will have to choose a research unit and a research project at the beginning of his training. He will have the ability to adjust his project and laboratory at the end of the first semester and at the end of the third semester. Language and cultural courses will be added to the program according to the background of the students.
The first year will combine a core of compulsory courses together with optional courses related to vibrations, waves and acoustics: Acoustics in fluid media, Data and signal processing, Fluid-structure interactions, Propagation of elastic and acoustic waves in inhomogeneous media. A research project in one of the associated research lab will be done during the second semester.
The program of the second year will include optional courses taken from the Master programs in Mechanics and Applied Mathematics, or from other Master programs if this is consistent with the research project. The second semester of the second year is devoted to a research project in one of the associated research labs, that will allow the student and the supervisor(s) to fine-tune the PhD project of the following three years. Language and cultural courses will also be part of the training program during the second year.
The following three years will be devoted the PhD project according to the rules defined by the doctoral school of IP Paris.

Licence/BSc (or equivalent diploma) with highest honors
Students may also have the possibility to start the PhD Program in the second year of the MSc (4-year PhD program).
The deadline for PhD Track application is February 28, 2020 – Extended to March 22, 2020
Eligible applicants on the basis of the provided documentation will be contacted for an interview from the 15th of March onwards.
You shall receive an answer 2 months after the application deadline of the session.
Successful applicants will obtain a three-year PhD scholarship for year 3 to 5.
