Master 1: Sciences and Technologies for Energy
The M1 of the Energy Master provides the students with the advanced scientific and technological knowledge required to perform in one of the three tracks offered at the M2 level. It is organized in mandatory and elective scientific courses, language courses, various projects and an internship, as detailed below:
- Refresher and fundamental mandatory courses: 294 h, 24 ECTS
- Elective courses: 180 h, 15 ECTS
- Bibliographical or short laboratory project: 3 ECTS
- Language and humanities: 40 h, 4 ECTS
- 12 weeks’ research internship – 14 ECTS
Via the elective courses covering various topics including physics, engineering, applied mathematics, network management, etc., the student may build a personalized curriculum and prepare for the more specialized tracks in the second year.

At the end of the M1 year, the students should have acquired a high level knowledge of the scientific basis related to the energy sector, including Physics, Mecanics, Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Chemical engineering, applied Mathematics, and Communication sciences. They will be able to apprehend the working principles of the various techniques of energy production, storage and distribution. They will also get a broad comprehension of the related environment and climate issues, as well as the economy and society impacts of the energy transition.
The M1 is composed of 9 mandatory courses, a set of elective courses, a bibliographic or short laboratory project, language and humanity courses, and a research internship of 12 weeks.

Around the world, the energy sector offers bright career opportunities for engineers with the advanced scientific and technical skills needed to drive the energy transition, complemented by a solid understanding of related economic and social issues. For students wishing to pursue a PhD, the IP Paris laboratories involved in the Master, and their industrial or academic partners in France or abroad, provide numerous thesis subjects of the highest interest. The offer of PhD grants on topics related to energy transition and climate change mitigation will be strengthened through the Energy for Climate Interdisciplinary Center. For a limited number of students selected on the basis of academic excellence, the PhD track gives the opportunity to start working on a long-term research project while being funded from the beginning of the Master.
IP Paris’ Master of Energy takes part in the Interdisciplinary Center “Energy for Climate” (EUR E4C), carried by the Polytechnique Institute of Paris. E4C gathers members from all the institutions of IP Paris (above mentioned laboratories), plus HEC and the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (CEREA/ENPC & EDF; CERMICS/ENPC). Among the objectives of E4C, several actions are directly linked to the Master:
Education action E1: International interdisciplinary E4C masters – the IP Paris Master in Energy represents the flagship of E4C education program.
Education action E3: PhD tracks – PhD tracks may be proposed to selected students of IP Paris’ Energy Master.
Education action E4: International summer school on energy – Several schools for masters and PhD students are supported every year on various themes: Photovoltaic Solar; Smart-Buildings to Smart-Cities; Fluid Dynamic for a Sustainable Environment.
Education action E5: Towards employment – This action is carried out by favoring industry involvement in E4C education program and alumni network interaction.
Numerous industrial partners are involved in the Energy Master in different manners:
- by funding Master scholarships for selected students;
- by funding chairs that promote education actions;
- by contributing to courses, giving lectures;
- by offering internships;
- by proposing subjects for collective projects;
- by participating in the development council.
The following companies may be cited as examples: Total; ENGIE; EDF; PSA Peugeot Citroën; Saint-Gobain; Schneider Electric; Air Liquide; Alstom; Cogenpower; Nam.R; Zinium; etc.
Some of these companies are strongly involved in the E4C Interdisciplinary Center and participate in the development of demonstrators and platforms. Master’s students thus have the opportunity to take practical training on pilot-scale research facilities, by addressing topics directly related to the major issues of the energy transition during their internships.
Chairs and partnerships
Several chairs and sponsorships are active in the frame of E4C, the funding strategy of which relies on different sources:
- state subsidies through the institution members of IP Paris, CNRS, ENPC, CEA
- research contracts
- sponsorships and chairs in place at a Foundation of one IP Paris institution member, which subject is directly linked to E4C research and education program
E4C thus ensures a close relationship between research and education activities on the topics of energy transition and climate change remediation, and promotes an environment of close collaboration with industrial companies in the sector. As an EUR (Ecole Universitaire de Recherche) initiative, E4C should gain public subsidies that will be used to strengthen this link and promote public-private synergisms in research and education. The involvement of students of the E4C education program in research activities takes the following forms:
- master student group projects conducted in host E4C labs (about 30 projects per year)
- internships proposed by host E4C labs at master level with possible follow-up in PhD (12 internships per year)
- PhD tracks (4 PhD tracks per year).
- Bachelor of Sciences from a renowned University
- The level in fundamental disciplines (mathematics, physics, mechanics, chemistry) should be in the top 20% ranking.
- Candidates should have a very good level in English (minimum B2, preferred C1).
- A good level in French is appreciated, though not mandatory.
Deadlines for the Master application sessions are as follows:
– First session: February 28, 2020
– Second session: April 30, 2020
– Third Session (optional): June 30, 2020 (only if there are availabilities remaining after the 2 first sessions)
Applications not finalized for a session will automatically be carried over to the next session.
