Chemistry is a basic science that may be used to resolve many of the challenges faced by our society today such as health issues, sustainable development, energy and innovative materials.
The PhD Track “Chemistry and Interfaces” of the “Institut Polytechnique de Paris” has been designed to combine state of the art academic knowledge in chemistry together with long term research projects addressing these challenges. The program will be proposed to students combining excellence in chemistry and desire to perform a PhD in the research environment of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris.
Objectives
- reach a high expertise in one of the various fields of chemistry covered by the department (organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, coordination chemistry, chemistry for materials)
- explore the applications of chemistry i other fields (materials, physics, biology) by selecting courses at the interfaces
- Combine theoretical courses with a strong experimental training by selecting several research projects during the first semesters before starting the PhD.
The five-year curriculum of the PhD track trains students in cutting-edge research for them to pursue international careers in prestigious universities or leading companies in their domain.
Every year, the program of every student has to be discussed and validated by his/her tutor, who is a member of the IP Paris faculty. According to the student’s specialization wishes, the course program will be individualized as much as possible.
The first year of the PhD Track is based on the Master 1, Chemistry and Interfaces
The second year of the PhD Track is mainly based on two Master 2 programs. The first one, “Molecular Chemistry and Interfaces, (MOCHI)” is proposed by IP Paris together with parteners from Upsay (ENS Saclay and Université Paris-Sud) while the second is more focused on materials (Materials chemistry and Interfaces). MOCHI focuses on organic synthesis and organometallic chemistry with an important approach on modelisation. During these two years, other Educational Units are also proposed: French (for non French native speakers), English, Research Seminars (at IHES), for example.
In the first and second years, it is also possible to follow courses from other Departments at Institut Polytechnique de Paris
The training during the first two years will be discussed for each applicant with the objective of replacing part of the courses normally proposed in our masters by research projects in order to give students the best conditions to select their PhD program. Research projects during the first three semesters will be performed in the research group of the department, we advise students to test several projects and research environments in order to have a better view of the field. More than 30 ECTS (on 60) will be devoted to research projects during the first two years of the program.
A research project may be done in a partner university in the framework of a research collaboration between the chemistry department of Institut Polytechnique de Paris and the Partner University.
Students can benefit from the ongoing collaborations of the research units of IPParis involved in chemistry (LSO, LCM, PMC, UCP…)
Admission requirements
Academic prerequisites
Completion of a Bachelor of science, with highest honors, at Institut Polytechnique de Paris or equivalent in France or abroad.
Evidence of research potential is essential as the main goal of such a PhD program is to train first class researchers.
Students who have completed the first year of an equivalent program may exceptionally be directly admitted to the second year (4-year PhD program).
Language prerequisites
A certificate of proficiency in English (level B2) is required (TOEIC, IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge ESOL), except for native speakers and students who previously studied in English.

Fees and scholarships
Estimated fees for 2022-2023 are subject to increase
- Regular fees: 243€
