The Materials Chemistry and Interfaces Master’s program aims to provide a fundamental understanding of all aspects relating to the development and engineering of materials. Students will enhance their ability to research, design, assess, implement and review solutions to the challenges facing our society across a wide range of materials. The main applications relate to energy, transport, electronics, medicine, nanotechnologies and health.

The courses are taught by expert academics through formal lecturing and student-led coursework. Students will have access to top-level infrastructure when working on real research projects as part of established research groups.

The Master’s program allows engineers and scientists from a variety of backgrounds (chemistry, chemical engineering, materials or physics) to build on their experience and expertise. It provides strong bases in engineering and sciences that can be transferred to the next stage of their career in academia or industry.

Objectives

This Master’s program aims to:

  • Provide a strong interdisciplinary background in materials science and, in particular,  materials science engineering: functional physical/chemical properties, materials synthesis, nanostructuring and shaping, characterization of structural/microstructural/chemical/physical properties, applications, surface states and engineering
  • Gain experience through practical sessions based on a project and/or learning-by-doing approach - this includes practical training in laboratories
  • Complete an internship at one of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris laboratories or with an industrial partner

After completing the Master’s program students will be able to:

  • Start a career as an industrial engineer in fields relating materials science engineering e.g. energy, electronics, functional materials, advanced ceramics, chemistry, polymers and integrated devices
  • Pursue a PhD in a laboratory

Elective courses

Students have the possibility to participate in courses offered by other IPP Master programs (Bio-mechanics, physics, …) OR to substitute some of the courses listed above with new ones. This possibility will be discussed on a case-by-case basis. In all cases, the student will have to validate a total number of 60 credits (ECTS) to obtain the Master 2 diploma.

Internship (25 ECTS)

During the second semester, students will have to perform an internship in one of the laboratories associated with the master program (see list below) or at industrial partners. This internship aims at putting in practice the knowledge acquired during the first semester and to apply it through an original research project.

A typical topic of research internship could be:

- The formulation, characterisation and tests of new materials for specific devices: Fuel cells, Li-ion batteries, phase transition energy storage, …

- The deposition, characterisation and tests of new nanostructured concepts for electronic / energy / environment applications: triboelectricity, multiferroics, energy harvesters, functional layers for windows/lenses, …

Admission requirements

Academic prerequisites

  • Completion of the first year of a Master’s program in Chemistry at Institut Polytechnique de Paris or equivalent in France or abroad
  • Possess a solid background in materials science, either following the first year of a Master’s program in materials science, chemistry or physics, or Engineering cycle (second year) focusing on materials science

Language prerequisites

C1 level of English
